Fred Cook, Crediton, Devon
Please find enclosed the small piece of aluminium which as an 11 year old I managed to collect from the site of the Wellington crash and which I am willing to donate to the MOSV Trust, hoping it will make a little bit of interest to those who remember the tragic event. Hoping also the 11 July this year will be warm and a clear sky for the fly past and parade.
The piece of debris picked up by Fred was analysed by Boscombe Down Aviation Collection (Heritage Centre). The piece is thought to be part of the Auto Pilot where a wire would run over the rollers and this part would have been situated beneath the pilot in the cockpit. It is however confusing that no part number is stamped on but it is suspected that this was scratched on which was a normal wartime saving on engraving and this may have been where there is evidence of scraping on the part. The part was recognised and is in amazingly good condition. At least one other report of a piece of debris retained by a child from this plane has been relayed to me but the whereabouts or what happened to it are not known. It is not known at this time what will be done with the piece but the Trustees will in due course preserve it in a frame for display in an appropriate setting. I was also advised that one child frightened by the threat of police action did put some ammunition (Bullets) found in the village stream near the Bridge Inn!
Jessie Murry of Ilkeston was walking over ‘Seven Fields’ towards Dale at the time of the accident. She is now 84 of age and still remembers the incident vividly.
Nancy Goodwin (Nee Page) was sat on the Stanley Brook bridge next to the Bridge Inn, Stanley Village prior to the ‘boom’ that indicated the accident she said “I’m bored, nothing ever happens here.” This just goes to show that the 14 year olds of today do have something in common with those far off days don’t they?
Conclusion
Many people have phoned me and written in with regards to this dedication and their recollections and thoughts. Unfortunately it is impossible to record all, but the underlying theme has been support and pride at the project as demonstrated by Edith Lane who wrote advising her late husband Bob was a rear gunner flying in Lancaster’s in WWII and said I count my blessings every day that he came home safe after all the operations he took part in. Tom and Pat Cockeram of Uttoxeter, friends of both my wife and I wrote to make a donation especially as Tom had served as aircrew in WWII. Tom had suffered a severe stroke but Pat assures me he was able to communicate his support. Unfortunately I attended Tom’s funeral in Stafford on Monday 1 March 2004 knowing that he has not only gone to a better place but also that he will have good company – another brave Gentle – man. It is men such as these, and the Aircrew we are commemorating whom we owe so much to – We Will Remember Them
