Report on His Death The sudden death on Tuesday Sept 4 (1934) of Mr Cornelius Boam came as a shock to his family and wide circle of friends and not least to the people of Mapperley amongst whom he had chosen to spend the last few years of his life. Having served at the Simon Pit of the Mapperley Colliery Company for 12 years, principally as a winding cableman until his retirement 2 years ago. It was a co-incidence that the collapse which brought about his end should have occurred at the colliery the day prior to his death. Wither he had gone to deliver the morning mail, during the time he had resided in Mapperley. He had interested himself in the church and had been honoured by being appointed vicar's warden last Easter. He was also treasurer of the local branch of the Winding Engineersmen's Union, a position he had held for many years. Mr Boam was a native of Ilkeston, and had lived the greater part of his life in Cotmanhay, where he was very well known. He first married Hannah, daughter of the late Mr Jim Fretwell, of Shipley Common, who pre-deceased him, his second wife being Miss Hart, of the Post Office Mapperley. He leaves 9 children by his first wife, all of whom are married. The funeral took place on the following Thursday, the cortege being met at the village church by the Rev J Fleming and choir, who sang 'Jesus lover of my soul' at the close of the service. The internment took place at the Park Cemetery Ilkeston. Mr Fleming conducting the last rights. The mourners were: Mrs Boam widow, Mr and Mrs T Boam, Mr C Boam grandson, and Mrs C Boam daughter in law; Miss Peggy Boam granddaughter, Mr W Brown son in law, Mr and Mrs A Brown, Mr and Mrs A Ensor, Mr and Mrs S Reeves, Mr and Mrs C Daykin, Mr and Mrs W Slater, Mr and Mrs R Calladine, Mr and Mrs W Nottinham, Mr and Mrs Harry Boam, Mrs Jeffreys sister, Mr and Mrs Hart brother in law, Mrs Savage sister in law, Mr and Mrs W Bellamy sister in law, Mr and Mrs J Evans sister in law, Mrs Hart (Heanor). Several of his old workmates and friends were present at the cemetery. The bearers were Messrs E and W Evans, nephews, and Mr Simpson, the secretary of the Winding Engineermen's Union. The funeral was directed by Mr W F Bates Cotmanhay. They are on the V shaped area between the left and right driveway to Park Hall Farm. This is the handywork of Dave and Jane. They are mostly based on a theme for a certain time throughout the year. Well done both of you and thank you for making us smile with delight as we drive or walk by. A special thank you to Dave and Jane for all their help with this Park Hall Farm section.
