The Burrows Family of Mapperley. Information and photographs supplied by I am the daughter of the late Malcolm Burrows who spent a lot of time researching our family history. He was a particular expert on Shipley Hall and as a teenager I was involved with the excavations of the hall in the 1970s. Malcolm Burrows
Margaret (Maggie) Burrows by Luke Burrows Grave in Mapperley Churchyard Luke Burrows moved to Mapperley from Ketton in Rutland in the 1850s and is buried in Mapperley churchyard. His children and their children grew up in Mapperley and West Hallam. Burrows Family Summary of Those Family Members Connected to Mapperley & West Hallam Luke Burrows In 1841 Luke lived in Ketton, Rutland. In 1855 he was employed as a labourer in Mapperley where he also lived. In 1881 in Mapperley he was employed as a Miner. Mary was also living in Mapperley in 1855. A census shows her address as 138 Church Road.? (This address no longer exists) Luke and Mary had the following four children – John Burrows * born June 1862 in Mapperley. Dies April 1944 in West Hallam. Married Harriett Gamble in 1891 in Holy Trinity, Mapperley. She was born in November 1863 in Mapperley and died in 1964 in Ilkeston. George Burrows born July 1865 in Mapperley. He was baptised on 6 August 1865 in Mapperley. He was employed as a gardener in 1881in Church Road, Mapperley. Died in 1949 in Paighton, Devon. Elijah Burrows was born in 1871 in Mapperley. Samual Burrows was born in March 1874 in Mapperley. He dies approx. May 1948 in Coalville. He married Matilda Durow about February 1899 in Ilkeston. She was born in 1872 in Mapperley. She died in 1932. Luke Burrows Census info 1871 & 1891 from Roger Wood’s Ancestry Postings Some Census info - 1871 HARRIETT BURROWS (nèe Gamble) born November 1863 in Mapperley. She died in 1964 at the age of 100. Both John and Harriett died whilst still residing in the old Laundry (converted to cottages) which stood just below the Lodge House which is adjacent to the cenotaph. John was a gardener by trade and worked at several locations including Keele Hall (Staffordshire) in 1881, Hillingdon Court (Uxbridge) 1885 - 88, Shipley Hall 1888, West Hallam Hall, Longdons in 1918 and Strettons Brewery in 1919. At the time of working at West Hallam Hall John was living with his wife Harriett and four children in the old laundry cottages that was next door to the Lodge House on St.Wilfrids Road, by this time the old laundry had been converted into three cottages. When the FitzHerbert-Wright family left West Hallam Hall in 1913 to reside at Yeldersley Hall (nr Ashbourne), Muriel Harriett the wife of Captain Henry FitzHerbert-Wright handed over a pastel portrait of herself to John Burrows who was Head Gardener at the hall. Muriel Harriett is the Great Great Grandmother of Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York).
