OCast

Open casting. The Whitehouse Open casting commenced in April 1977 and continued till the mid 1980's.

There is a very interesting article on the following website by Joe Henshaw

The National Coal Board, once the open casting had been completed, paid for part of the land to have a microlight field. Arthur had previously been in the Air Force and trained to be a pilot. He had a love of microlights

Local Newspaper Reports

There was some local opposition to the planning application, as can be seen by these reports. Never the less, permission was obtained and the microlighting still continues to this day.

Son, David, worked on various open cast sites for 20 years before he became full time on the farm.

I recall that his sister Brenda worked part time for my dad, Ron Richardson, helping behind the bar in evenings at The Old Black Horse, Mapperley.

It was such a pleasure meeting up with Beryl again after quite a few years. She is a remarkable 92-year-old who she says has had a really good life on the farm. Sadly, Arthur passed away in January 2018 at the age of 93 years.

Thank you so very much for your time Beryl.

My dear sir
We arrived home safely about 4.30. I walked up the hills and I kept nice & warm. Freddie and baby lay down in bottom and went to sleep.
We went to see a farm at Hazlewood Nr Duffield it is only about 8 miles from Ashbourne, Charlie says he should make Ash his Market Town, it is only 36 acres but would save us having a sale. Come down for Xmas if they can spare you, shall look forward to your coming, Willison
Fondest love to all Alice Willison?
