Two books by Jeff Wynch from the Ilkeston & District Local History Society on the history of cycling and the cycle trade in Ilkeston in the last two decades of the nineteenth century The cycle craze first took hold among middle class young men in the 1870s who risked their necks riding penny farthings on the rough roads of the time. The Ilkeston Bicycle Club was formed in 1884, but cycling really boomed with the invention of the safety bicycle and a fall in prices in the late 1880s. A Town on Two Wheels (£10) is about these early days of cycling in Ilkeston. Deals on Wheels (£6) tells the story of the local manufacturers, inventors and retailers of cycles in the 1880s and 1890s. Both books are available from the Smoothie Bar, Bath Street and Blinkinks, South Street. They are also on sale whenever the History Society holds talks or events and from the Secretary. 18 Nursery Hollow Deals on Wheels A Town on Two Wheels Sketch of old Ilkeston by Mapperley artist Stella Brookes for a 1989 calendar ![]() Disclaimer - Copyright - Is this page correct?
